Rediscovering our colleague Malintzin

Overview: In 2019, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the fall of Tenochtitlan, several professions made a review of historical events and their main characters. An indigenous interpreter named Malintzin stole the thunder of a long list of prominent historical characters. From 500 years ago to this day her story tells our story.
As those responsible for the voice of others, we sometimes ignore the perspective of the users of our services. On the other hand, we rarely have the opportunity to listen to how the reception of our translated words is experienced. The enigma of Malintzin-also known as Malinche- is an excellent window to review how other professions see us and what they think goes on in our minds and behind the scenes. In this talk, we will take a tour of different resources published recently about the interpreter who changed the course of history and made her name synonymous with interpreting.
Objectives:
- Rediscover a historical interpreter
- Learn about how interpreting is experienced
- Identify some areas of interpreting that catch the eye of the users of our services
- Seize the enigma of Malintzin as a tool to explain why using human professional interpreting is always worth it.
- Use historical facts to create a conversation with our clients about the nature of our profession

Presenter Bio: Darinka Mangino is a conference interpreter for Spanish, English, French & Portuguese based in Paris, France. She holds a Masters in Advanced Studies for Interpreting Trainers from the University of Geneva, Switzerland; a PGC in Forensic Linguistics from Aston University, United Kingdom and a university degree in Conference Interpreting from Instituto Superior de Interpretes y Traductores, Mexico City.
She is a member of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) and the Mexican Translator´s Association (OMT). Currently Darinka is a member of the Committee of Admissions and Language Classification of AIIC for 2022-2025. Mangino has over 25 years of professional experience as a high-profile Conference & Diplomatic Interpreter. She provides her professional services for several international organizations, NGO´s and private companies.
Darinka has taught at an undergraduate and graduate level for over a decade and coaches interpreters.
