Call for Proposals

The National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators is now accepting presentation proposals for the 42nd NAJIT Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, May 14-16, 2021. 

NAJIT’s Annual Conference is the premier event for language professionals and stakeholders of language services in the judiciary and beyond. Lead the conversation by preparing a session proposal. Our sessions are highly interactive and provide participants with relevant content and practical tools that they can apply in their own work. We invite you to help shape the future of interpreting and translation by proposing a session today.

Proposals may be submitted for either a pre-conference workshop, a main conference session, or both as long as they are submitted separately.

Submission Deadlines

Opens: October 28, 2020
Closes: December 18, 2020
Confirmation of Acceptance: January 29, 2021
Conference: May 14-16, 2021

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS:  Friday, May 14th

  • Pre-conference workshops are skill-building presentations lasting 3 or 6 hours and may be language-neutral or language-specific.
  • Attendance is limited to allow participants greater interaction with presenters and allow them to receive more personalized feedback.
  • Presenters do not need to be NAJIT members to submit a proposal.
  • Pre-conference workshop presenters receive an honorarium and some travel reimbursement. If you present both a pre-conference workshop and a main conference session you will receive a complimentary registration for the main conference (You must submit two separate proposals). MAIN CONFERENCE SESSIONS: Saturday, May 15, and Sunday, May 16, 2021.
These are 60, 90, or 120-minute interactive sessions.

  • Sessions may be conducted in English or be language specific.
  • Presenters do not need to be  NAJIT members to submit a proposal. 
  • Presenters receive a 15% discount off the member registration rate for the conference.

The deadline for submitting proposals for both pre-conference workshops and conference sessions is December 4, 2020.

Proposals may focus on all areas of translation and interpreting, including the following specialized areas:

  1. Education and training of interpreters and translators
  2. Skill-building for consecutive or simultaneous interpreting, note-taking, etc.
  3. Exam-taking strategies for certification candidates
  4. Ethics applied to the practice of translation and interpretation
  5. Transcription and Translation, Transliteration, Translation, Editing 
  6. Interpreting modalities, techniques, and best practices
  7. Interpreting in specific settings: immigration, proffers, depositions
  8. Topics of special interest to legal translators, proofreaders, and editors 
  9. Technologies and trends affecting the practice of the profession
  10. Best business practices for language professionals
  11. The intersection of legal language in other settings (medical, community, etc.) 
  12. Career planning, development, and mapping success for linguists
  13. Panels on topics of specific interest to the profession and the industry

Presenting at the NAJIT conference is a privilege and a mark of distinction in the profession. Our attendees expect and deserve the best content that we can provide. Proposals are evaluated and suggestions may be made in order to meet quality standards and space/time limitations. Acceptance notices will be sent in early 2021.

Presenter Benefits

Main conference presenters are entitled to a 15% discount off the registration fee. They receive no other reimbursement of expenses.

Pre-conference workshop presenters receive an honorarium in the amount of $300 for a three-hour session, or $450 for a six-hour session. You may also be reimbursed for eligible travel expenses up to $600*. If, in addition to a pre-conference presentation, a Friday presenter proposes and is selected to deliver an additional session during the main conference their conference registration fee will be waived. When proposing a Friday workshop, a main conference proposal is also encouraged. **PLEASE SUBMIT A SEPARATE FORM FOR EACH PRESENTATION.

*Only one honorarium and travel reimbursement are offered per workshop. Joint presenters will split the honorarium and travel reimbursement. Read NAJIT’s financial policy for complete details.

Presenters must register for the main conference if you wish to attend any conference events.
